A Bronx man will spend the next year in prison for his role in a "grandparents scam" targeting elderly victims across the state.
Edward Rosario-Canela was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Police say Rosario-Canela contacted elderly victims, posing as their grandchild in distress. He convinced them to send money to addresses in Connecticut and other locations. The money was then forwarded to co-conspirators in the Dominican Republic.
Rosario-Canela will also be required to pay over $655,000 in restitution to his victims.
The "grandparents scam" is a common scheme where fraudsters impersonate family members in need of immediate financial assistance.
Law enforcement agencies urge the public to be vigilant and avoid sending money to unknown individuals, especially when contacted unexpectedly.
