Officials from the Monroe Vol. Fire Department says a cat has died after a fire started in a kitchen in a Monroe condominium.

It happened at North Brook condominiums on Rosewood Circle just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

When firefighters arrived, they found fire on the second floor and smoke on the third floor of the four-unit townhome.

A home health aide and police officers carried out a disabled resident, who was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

During their search, firefighters found a cat and attempted to resuscitate the animal but were unsuccessful.

Residents from the adjoining units were able to safely evacuate on their own.

Officials say one adjacent unit does have smoke damage, while two other units were not damaged and those residents were able to return to their homes.

The fire, which was deemed unintentional, originated in the kitchen but did not spread.

The kitchen was heavily damaged though.

The department is reminding people to have working smoke alarms, quickly evacuate if a fire starts and do not go back inside.
