The fallout from last week’s water main break in Bedford Park is still disrupting lives, leaving some residents without power, with just days before Christmas.

Two buildings at 2985 and 2995 Botanical Square remain without electricity, forcing tenants to rely on temporary boilers for heat and generators for common area lighting. Residents say the situation is creating significant challenges, especially for elderly tenants and those with disabilities.

“I’m on the top floor, which means I have to walk up six flights of stairs,” said resident Mikell Grand. “I have some health concerns.”

Without power, tenants are unable to charge phones or access elevators. Package theft has also become a concern.

“We’ve been losing packages every day since we lost power,” said Pablo Tiburcio. “We keep on complaining.”

The Red Cross is providing some relief, handing out meals twice a day and offering temporary housing to those most in need. Still, some residents say they want more communication about ongoing repairs.

“We need more information because we’re finding out from neighbors,” said one tenant.

Despite the challenges, some tenants are finding ways to keep the holiday spirit alive.

“I got all my gifts wrapped for my son,” said Moni, a resident. “I’ve got to still make it happen no matter what.”

Building management for the two buildings said electricians are working nearly around the clock, including on weekends and Christmas Day, to restore power as quickly as possible. Management has authorized multiple crews to expedite repairs, with hopes of restoring electricity by the end of this week.

Con Edison confirmed that electrical issues unrelated to the water main break must be resolved before full power can return. For now, many tenants are stuck in the dark during what’s supposed to be the most festive time of the year.
