Brighton Beach residents are speaking out about the city’s most expensive municipal parking lot, which costs $625 for a three-month permit.

Seniors, in particular, say they are paying a fortune, only to struggle with finding a spot.

Frustrated locals say non-permit holders frequently take up spaces, especially on weekends and during the summer, leaving paying residents forced to park on the street.

Residents also say the lack of surveillance and enforcement at the lot makes them feel unsafe.

“Residents are forced to park far from home and walk alone at night, putting their well-being at risk," said state Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton.

Residents are calling on the Department of Transportation to improve enforcement of parking permits, install security measures like cameras or on-site staff and create a designated area exclusively for permit holders.

Council Member Inna Vernikov and state Sen. Scarcella-Spanton have introduced legislation to provide discounted rates for seniors, many of whom are on fixed incomes.
