Parents in Pelham Parkway are raising safety concerns and calling on the city to put a stop to speeding drivers in front of PS 357.

They say the intersection an accident waiting to happen at Lydig Avenue and Barnes Avenue.

"It's so busy, it's a busy cross street," said Richard Cortijo, whose son attends PS 357.

There are no speed limit or school zone signs within a block of the school. There is a single crossing guard that assists with students crossing the street during arrival and dismissal.

"There is no school zone yellow signs or anything indicating this is a school zone, and the fact is that people are speeding and risking the lives of our resident kids," said Roxanne Delgado, who leads Friends of Pelham Parkway, a community advocacy group in the area.

According to NYC Open Data, one pedestrian and one driver were injured in 2024 on Lydig Avenue between Barnes Avenue and Matthews Avenue.

Delgado has put a request into the city's Department of Transportation for a speed hump to be installed in front of PS 357 to force drivers to slow down.

"Addressing speeding on the streets next to schools and throughout the city is critical in order to keep people safe. We are reviewing this request, " said a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation.

Speed humps and slow school zones are planned on a case-by-case basis.
