A fire early Sunday morning in Edison severely damaged an apartment complex and displaced residents from over 30 units.

Officials say the flames broke out around 4:30 a.m. on Vista Dr. The deputy chief says crews were able to get all occupants out safely.

Edison, South Plainfield and New Brunswick fire departments helped respond to the scene.

The American Red Cross says at least 70 people were displaced. They will aid those with heavily damaged apartments.

An official says many of the families have renters insurance which will help them with temporary housing, and some are staying with family and friends.

Officials say windy weather has made fighting the fire challenging. Some parts of Woodbridge Avenue remain closed off as crews continue their efforts.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
