City leaders announced a historic low for traffic deaths.

Officials said the first quarter of 2025 saw a steep decline in traffic deaths across the board among pedestrians, cyclists, motorized two-wheeler riders and motor vehicle drivers.

There were 41 fatalities during the first three months of this year.

That’s 24 fewer than 2024 and the second fewest of any year in recorded history.

Leaders said the same time frame also saw a sharp decline in injuries among the same groups.

Officials said traffic fatalities in New York City have steadily declined following a spike during the COVID-19 pandemic, which peaked in 2021.

Leaders credited the success of “Vision Zero,” as well as pedestrian spaces, safer intersections, 24/7 speed cameras and expanding red light cameras.

But they said there is more work to do to keep New Yorkers safe.

The historic low came on the heels of the DOT announcing the expansion of open streets, which provides car-free zones for pedestrians and cyclists.
