A man living in a family shelter in Hunts Point says his unit is infested with rats and mice. News 12 spoke with the father of the family Luis.

When asked how he was feeling about his situation, he replied, “Out of it. Tired. Depressed. I feel like I can't get anything done. My words don't matter.”

Luis told News 12 management placed temporary fixes over some holes throughout his apartment where the rats were supposedly crawling through. But he says not much else has been done.

Aside from the rats, he said there’s mold and the structure of the apartment is compromised. One of his kids is allergic to rats and mold and had to go to the hospital recently. He says the doctor claimed it could have been due to the conditions in his apartment.

“All I want is to better my kids and to keep them safe. It’s what a father is there for,” Luis said.

The Department of Homeless Services tells News 12 they will move Luis’ family to another shelter while they look into the issues brought up in his current unit.
