The mayor’s office, alongside the city’s Economic Development Corporation, announced plans to reimagine the waterfront area by the Fulton Fish Market.

The city says the plan would turn the space into a marine terminal for companies to utilize barges in waterways to transport goods instead of roads.

City agencies also announced the removal of the Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center. The facility currently exists as a decommissioned prison on the East River. The barge, vacant since November 2023, would be officially removed and replaced with a port for ships.

The $28 million plan would invest money in waterfront access and improve greenways.

The city says the terminal would create 400 construction jobs, 100 permanent jobs and $3.9B in economic over the next 30 years.

The terminal would connect ports up and down the East Coast, including the Brooklyn Marine Terminal.

The NYCEDC says building the terminal adjacent to the “Blue Highway” facility in Hunt’s Point would allow for an estimated 9,000 less truck trips per month, positively impacting both congestion on the roads and the environment.
