The Fire Island Inlet Bridge is undergoing a third inspection tonight after a report that a piece of concrete may have fallen from the structure Sunday night. The report, made by a charter boat captain, prompted concern among drivers and officials, leading to a series of safety assessments.

“They really need to make sure they figure out what’s going on,” said Derrek Hughes, of Oakdale, echoing the concerns of many residents who travel across the bridge to reach Robert Moses State Park.

Ben Zarzana, who is visiting family on Long Island, shared his unease.

"It’s kind of scary. My parents, my sister’s on this bridge three days a week," he said.

The New York State Department of Transportation conducted two prior inspections and determined the bridge to be structurally sound. A third inspection is taking place tonight. During this time, traffic will be restricted to one lane, alternating in each direction. Earlier today, the bridge was fully closed, but it reopened around 1 p.m.

Michael Shenoda, an associate professor of Civil Engineering Technology at Farmingdale State College, said the situation highlights the need for long-term planning.

"I’ve gotten a sense from the reports and things I’ve read that there is going to be some more comprehensive maintenance over the medium to long term — and maybe even a bridge replacement," Shenoda said. "The inspection that’s later on tonight is going to give them a sense of whether that needs to be sped up a little bit."

The partial shutdown is expected to remain in place until noon Tuesday. Meanwhile, marine traffic is being directed away from the north side of the bridge, where the concrete debris was reportedly seen falling.
