Mother arrested in connection to deaths of 2 infants found behind Bronx building in 2020

Officials say 36-year-old Stephanie Castillo was arrested and faces six counts of murder and manslaughter. Castillo was shackled at the wrists and ankles as detectives transported her out of the 44th Precinct on Friday afternoon.
She did not answer any questions from reporters.
Investigators believe she killed the twins and dropped them out of a window.
The superintendent of 1460 College Ave. made the horrifying discovery of the twin babies in the back alley of the building on Nov. 9, 2020.
"We used a technique called IGG, investigative genetic genealogy to get where we are today," said Michael Baldassano, assistant chief and commanding officer of Citywide Investigations Detective Bureau.
Detectives say Castillo was arrested after leaving a women's shelter where she was currently living on Jerome Avenue on Friday.
Castillo lived on the fourth floor in the building with her parents at the time of their deaths and did not appear noticeably pregnant. Neighbors say the case has haunted the apartment building for years.
"What's earie to me is how normal she acted after, you know, you wouldn't even know she was pregnant or do something like that," said Jordan Garcia, who lives in the building.
The heartbreak was felt in the NYPD. Detectives in the case named the twins Zeke and Zane and gave them a funeral. Each year on the twins' anniversary, the Bronx Detectives Unit held a vigil outside the building, promising to stop at nothing for justice.
"This was really a personal case to them, as is almost every case we investigate, but this one really, because it was two infants hit home," said Baldassano.
