MTA warns riders: Major weekend subway changes impact 4, 5, and 6 trains

If you’re planning to take the subway into Manhattan this weekend, you might need to rethink your route.

Starting Friday night at 11:30 p.m., the 4, 5, and 6 trains will not run south of Grand Central Station, according to signs posted at Borough Hall and MTA officials. That means no direct service from Brooklyn into Manhattan on those lines through the weekend.

The disruption is part of a major track replacement project, and crews will be working through the weekend until 5 a.m. Monday.

The MTA says these upgrades are designed to make the system run more smoothly — but not everyone is buying it.

“Every time they say track work, all I hear is delays,” said commuter Esmond Lewis. “They do track work during the week and it impacts me. I hear they’re trying to make the trains run smoother… but honestly, I don’t always believe it. I don’t really see anything changing.”

The good news: This is the second and final weekend of these particular service changes.

If you’re traveling from Borough Hall, you can still take the 2, 3, or R trains into Manhattan. Once in the city, the 42nd Street shuttle (7 train) will also be running overnight to help riders navigate Midtown.

Bottom line: Give yourself extra time and expect some delays. The MTA says it’s all part of a bigger plan to improve the system long-term.
