After years of operating out of a space many described as cold and uninviting, the NYPD has opened a new Special Victims Unit facility in Kingsbridge, designed to bring compassion, privacy and dignity to survivors of sexual violence.
The new site houses NYPD Special Victims detectives with partners from the Bronx District Attorney’s Office and the nonprofit Safe Horizon.
The goal is to make sure survivors have immediate access to every resource they need, all in one welcoming environment
Officials say the facility reflects a trauma-informed approach, with private interview rooms, calm spaces, and design elements that promote comfort and healing.
“In 2025, the Bronx Special Victims Squad has investigated nearly 1,300 cases of sexual violence involving victims ages 13 and older. Each survivor deserves a space worthy of their courage,” said NYPD deputy commissioner Tania Kinsella.
The department says the new building represents what 21st-century policing should look like one centered on empathy, collaboration, and survivor-focused care.
