Police are investigating the death of 18-year-old Kimberli Olmos, who was found with a gunshot wound to the head inside a stairwell at the Harborview Houses in Hell’s Kitchen.

Officers responded to a 911 call of an assault in progress and found Olmos unresponsive. She was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Police first believed it was a self-inflicted wound, but after an autopsy, the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide.

Her family, who lives in Morris Heights, says the stories they’ve heard from the friends who were with her that night don’t make sense. Kimberli’s mother says she found out something happened to her daughter from a friend who wasn’t even there, and now she’s demanding answers.

Her grandmother, Carmen Julia Rodriguez, says they had been planning a girls trip together and never imagined it would end this way.

The family says they just want the truth and justice for Kimberli.

A funeral service is planned for Sunday.
