Rikers Island inmate indicted for slashing Correction Officer

Officials say the attack was unprovoked and was captured on video surveillance.

An inmate on Rikers Island has been indicted for slashing a correction officer.

Shemar Hassani-Shaw, 24, of Brooklyn was arraigned on Monday at the Bronx Supreme Court. According to the investigation, Hassani-Shaw approached a correction officer from behind and slashed him across the cheek. The incident happened on Dec. 3 inside the Otis Bantum Correctional Center. A sharp metal object and a sharpened piece of plastic were recovered at the scene.

Officials say the attack was unprovoked and was captured on video surveillance.

Hassani-Shaw is facing charges including attempted assault, promoting prison contraband and criminal possession of a weapon.
