A deadly fire broke out during Sunday's winter storm in University Heights.

FDNY Deputy Chief Andrew Holzmaier says firefighters were initially dispatched to 183 University Ave. around 7:44 a.m.

However, when crews arrived, they were notified the address was incorrect and were redirected to 2264 Grand Ave., where the fire was actively burning.

Firefighters encountered a heavy volume of fire on the first floor, coming from a window and extending into the hallway. The deputy chief says three people were affected by the fire: two civilians were injured, one in serious condition and another with minor injuries, The third person was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials say the victim was a woman in her 40s.

As firefighters worked to knock down the blaze, residents were forced to evacuate into the freezing cold, many escaping through fire escapes after smoke quickly filled hallways.

Several residents sought warmth inside a laundromat across the street, where the Red Cross was called in to assist.
