A water main break along Jerome Avenue in Concourse is causing traffic delays and raising safety concerns as frigid temperatures move in.
Crews with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection have been working throughout the day Thursday to contain the leak after water began rushing into the roadway — and spilling onto the Cross Bronx Expressway below.
The biggest concern is what happens once temperatures drop overnight, with standing water expected to freeze and create slick, hazardous conditions for drivers exiting the expressway and for pedestrians passing through the area.
DEP crews shut down a lane of Jerome Avenue to make repairs, causing traffic backups during the afternoon commute. Despite caution tape blocking off parts of the sidewalk, many pedestrians were seen ignoring the warnings and walking through the area.
So far, businesses along Jerome Avenue — including a nearby McDonald’s — do not appear to be impacted by the break. Crews remained on scene Thursday as repairs continue.
