The Freeport Union Free School District has filed a lawsuit against Superintendent Fia Davis, seeking nearly $400,000 and is asking a court to void her contract.
According to court documents, the district alleges Davis improperly used more than $100,000 in district funds to renovate her office and install a private bathroom without approval from the Board of Education.
Officials say the money had been earmarked to purchase a districtwide vehicle.
The lawsuit also claims Davis submitted a $20,000 invoice to an educational consultancy firm called Our Best Interest LLC, which the district says is owned by a friend of hers. The district alleges the invoice did not specify what services were provided.
“You can't come in here and think just because we hired you, you can do what you want to do. That's not how it works,” said Scott Richardson, vice president of the Freeport Public Schools Board.
In addition, the district alleges Davis misled board members about her academic credentials during the hiring process. When she applied for the superintendent position, Davis allegedly told the board she would receive her doctorate from Fordham University in September 2024 and assured officials she would earn the degree on time. However, the lawsuit states she did not receive the doctorate until May 2025.
The district argues that her contract was procured by fraud and should be voided. As part of that claim, officials are seeking $262,000.
The district is also seeking to annul Davis’ contract, which was set to run through 2028.
