The Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC) works with low-income families facing challenges like language barriers, limited education, unemployment and more.
NMIC has served low-income residents of the Bronx since 1979.
Its staff serves about 14,000 clients each year, including Dani Lopez's family.
"It was really that open door that NMIC had that my mom was able to walk through to get a lot of the help that she needed," said Lopez.
Dani says her mother, Irene, who immigrated from Ecuador experienced years of physical and mental abuse, she wasn't allowed to learn English or work.
"I grew up in Washington Heights with an amazing mom and little brother. We are actually survivors of domestic violence and over night things changed," said Lopez
That's when she found NMIC, and got the services she has been looking for.
Dani says NMIC gave her mother a second chance at life, it provided them with housing, benefits and English classes.
Over the 2025 fiscal year, NMC's Legal, Organizing & Advocacy department served 9,270 clients.
