New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced plans on how they will improve conditions on Rikers Island.
Under an executive order signed by the mayor, the plan includes ending 12-hour shifts for correctional staff by this spring. It also requires a new strategy by next summer to end people of different ages being housed together.
The order also calls to create a clear and formal agreement within the NYPD to define who is responsible for security before someone appears in court.
The mayor says process has already begun and the Department of Corrections will partner with the law and federal monitor to provide updates
