New York State police said Friday many of the crashes they handled on the Taconic State Parkway happened because people were driving too fast for the slick conditions.

On a stretch of the Taconic between Poughkeepsie and northern Putnam County, state police responded to at least 10 crashes all before 10:30 a.m.

It appears the tally does not include the numerous vehicles that broke down or slid off the passenger vehicle highway.

News 12 caught up with Kim Bassett during her commute from Columbia County to New York City.

She is an experienced Taconic navigator who was still surprised during Friday morning's rush hour.

"I actually have never seen that may cars off the road," Bassett said. "Some [crashed] into trees, so yeah, it was bad."

Jason Kessler, of Poughkeepsie, was just running errands Friday.

He drives the Taconic frequently.

He was not terribly surprised to see a crash scene every few miles.

"There are a lot of people who don't know how to drive because of the ice, so we get a lot of accidents because of that," he said, "and it's dangerous road to begin with, so accidents daily..

The rate of crashes on the Taconic decreased by early afternoon.

A state police spokesperson said that out of all the incidents on the Taconic Friday, only one person was hurt and that person's injuries were minor.
