With snow now settled across The Bronx, property owners are on the clock to clear sidewalks, hydrants and building entrances or risk fines from the Department of Sanitation.
It's a grueling but required task for landlords like Roc Bruncaj. The member of Small Property Owners of New York used a snowblower and shovel to dig out his property in Highbridge.
"It’s our responsibility to make sure nobody hurts themselves and that the paths are clear,” he said.
Bruncaj says clearing snow isn’t just about avoiding tickets — it’s about keeping neighbors safe. The landlord also helped an 80-year-old neighbor who was snowed in and unable to clear the sidewalk on his own.
“He obviously doesn’t have the ability to do it, so I figured I’d chip in and give a helping hand,” he said.
Even for those who enjoy winter weather, the record-breaking snowfall made cleanup a challenge. City officials remind property owners they are also responsible for clearing snow around fire hydrants. The Department of Sanitation says enforcement begins once the city’s snow removal deadline passes.
