A large fire at a chemical warehouse at 104 Lister Ave. in Newark was largely under control as of Thursday afternoon while an investigation into the cause was just getting underway.

Crews remained on scene in the Ironbound section of Newark, working through lingering hotspots. The scene was calmer than it had been earlier in the day, when the fire began at 12:53 p.m., according to city officials.

Video shared from the scene showed heavy flames and thick black smoke billowing from the building.

Over 100 members of the Newark Fire Department responded, along with the New Jersey EMS Task Force and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

At one point, seven ladder trucks were raised in the air as crews worked to knock down the flames. A drone was also used to help firefighters spot and extinguish remaining hotspots.

According to city officials, all 21 warehouse employees escaped the fire, and no injuries have been reported.
