The Abilities Expo Edison is underway this weekend at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center, bringing together families, caregivers, advocates and innovators focused on improving accessibility and independence for people with disabilities.

The long-running event features assistive technology, adaptive equipment, educational resources and hands-on demonstrations designed to support people living with both visible and invisible disabilities. Organizers say the goal is to connect attendees with tools that can make daily life more manageable and independent.

“There are so many amazing products that can be innovative for those with seen and unseen disabilities — wheelchairs, robotic devices, and all kinds of assistive technology you can only find here,” Dave Stevens, an ambassador with Abilities Expo said.

This year’s expo also includes interactive experiences such as adaptive sports demonstrations, an inclusive fashion show, and mobility activities like rock climbing designed for participants of all abilities.

For many families, the event is also an opportunity to discover new equipment that can make everyday tasks easier.

“There are devices that help with things people often take for granted — like being able to lift a cup or move independently after a paralysis or injury,” Stevens said.

U.S. Senator Andy Kim also made a stop at the expo, meeting with attendees and advocates. He said many families expressed concerns about potential reductions in disability-related services, including Medicaid support.

“They are terrified about cuts to Medicaid, which would be devastating to their care,” Kim said. “Many said they wouldn’t have their wheelchair or caregiver without it.”

Attendees like Marimar, who has a son with a disability, say the expo plays an important role in bridging gaps between available services and the people who rely on them.

"There is a bike at least for my son, it looks like it's pretty cool too, he can like, while we're biking, he can bike with us, and it's very special for him specialized for him," she said.

The Abilities Expo Edison is free and open to the public through tomorrow at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center in Edison.
