Extremely limited LIRR service to Penn Station as Amtrak crews make repairs following fire near terminal

There is some progress this morning in the efforts to restart Long Island Rail Road service to Penn Station.
Around 5:30 a.m., the MTA put out an alert that there will be extremely limited LIRR service into Penn Station after initially saying service would remain suspended throughout the morning rush.
There is still no eastbound service from Penn Station, so riders will have to use Grand Central or Atlantic Terminal instead.
Most trains are still being diverted to and from Grand Central Terminal, which remained open overnight and the subway is still cross-honoring LIRR tickets.
Right now, Amtrak crews are making repairs after a fire near Penn Station.
According to officials, the fire happened yesterday before noon in the East River Tunnel that connects the Long Island Rail Road between Manhattan and Queens.
Firefighters were able to get it under control, but the damage was significant, forcing crews to work throughout the day yesterday, overnight and into this morning to try and get things back on track.
The MTA is encouraging all riders to check their train's status when they get to their station.
