Tenant advocates gathered outside Hostos Community College on Monday ahead of a Rent Guidelines Board public hearing — demanding a rent freeze for the city’s roughly 2.4 million rent-stabilized tenants.
Organizers with the New York State Tenant Bloc, CASA and other housing advocacy groups say many New Yorkers are already struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living and cannot afford another rent increase.
The rally comes after the Rent Guidelines Board’s preliminary vote last month included a 0% increase option for both one- and two-year leases — marking the first time the board has considered freezing rents on two-year leases.
Landlord groups, meanwhile, argue building owners are also facing rising costs, including insurance, taxes, maintenance, and repairs. Some property owners say rent increases are necessary to keep buildings operating and maintained.
The Rent Guidelines Board is expected to hold several more public hearings before a final vote later this month.
