What started as a Knicks Game 3 watch party ended with street fights, damaged city property and arrests Monday night.
Video from outside the Bryant Park watch party shows crowds spilling into the streets after the Knicks’ loss. In one video, people are seen tearing down a bus sign. Another clip shows a man in a Knicks jersey appearing to hit someone with what looks like that same sign.
Other videos show people climbing scaffolding, jumping on police vehicles and surrounding a taxi cab as officers moved in to break up the crowds.
The NYPD says 21 people were taken into custody and five officers were hurt during the chaos.
Fans at a separate watch party in Crown Heights said they were embarrassed by the behavior.
“Oh, my God! It’s just very embarrassing for us,” Diana Luna said. “I mean, they lost, but they didn’t have to do all that.”
Aaron Britton said he has been a Knicks fan for 35 years and has never seen anything like it.
“They lost one game, it’s fine, nobody’s breaking down bus poles like what are we doing?” Britton said.
PBA President Patrick Hendry called the night “another shameful display from individuals more interested in brawling with each other, ripping up street signs and hurling objects at cops than supporting their team.”
A spokesperson for the mayor’s office said, “Mayor [Zohran] Mamdani wants all New Yorkers to celebrate and enjoy this run across the city while respecting one another.”
The Knicks still lead the series 2-1 heading into Game 4 at Madison Square Garden.
