A man identified as a person of interest in the fatal shooting of a 61-year-old North Bergen man has been found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in Passaic County, authorities said.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the North Bergen Police Department are investigating the incident, which occurred around 10:20 p.m. Sunday on Paterson Plank Road near 14th Street and The Mews apartment complex. Responding officers found Manuel Colon, 61, of North Bergen, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the North Bergen Police Department identified Luciano Vargas, 59, as a person of interest. The Wayne Police Department responded to Vargas’ residence, and the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team was activated after Vargas barricaded himself inside the home.
Vargas was later found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to prosecutors.
Investigators said the case is being treated as a domestic dispute.
