A free program in Fordham is helping fathers and father figures become more confident parents while strengthening their relationships with their children.

HERO Dads offers a four-week program that includes parenting workshops, one-on-one coaching, support groups, mental health counseling, job development and financial stability resources.

The program is led by psychologists and mental health counselors who help participants work through trauma, improve communication and develop healthier parenting skills.

Since launching in 2021, more than 1,000 men have participated in HERO Dads. Program leaders say fathers remain more involved in their children's lives even after completing the program.

"It's that balance, that combination that actually helps children thrive," said program director Traci Maynigo, explaining the importance of combining structure with warmth in parenting.

Moshe Moeller, the assistant program director, said the results are clearly visible even way beyond the four-week period.

"When we support dads in their parenting, kids just do better, said Moeller. "They do better in school, academically. There are less mental health issues. They are all around just more successful in life."

The program is free, and applications are accepted year-round.
