Suffolk County Water Authority urges water conservation amid drought

The Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA) is asking customers to reduce water use as severe drought conditions and an upcoming heat wave ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend push demand toward record levels.
Officials say heavy overnight and early morning lawn irrigation is straining the system, causing water storage tanks to start the day at low levels. Those tanks are critical for maintaining water pressure and supporting fire protection throughout the distribution network.
“It is exceptionally early in the summer season to experience severe drought and near-record water demand,” said SCWA Chairman Charlie Lefkowitz. “Without immediate reductions in water use, pressure drops will occur, compromising emergency fire response.”
Although no water alert has been issued, SCWA is urging customers to follow its odd/even lawn watering schedule:
Odd-numbered addresses: Water only on odd-numbered days.
Even-numbered addresses: Water only on even-numbered days.
No lawn watering between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
