A Bronx family is mourning the loss of their 93-year-old great-grandmother after police say she was struck and killed by a motorcyclist while crossing the street in Wakefield.
Lenora Campbell was crossing at White Plains Road and East 225th Street around 2:30 p.m. Monday when a 31-year-old man riding a motorcycle struck her, according to investigators.
The tragedy comes as New York City is seeing historic declines in pedestrian deaths. According to the latest Vision Zero report, 46 pedestrians have been killed in traffic crashes citywide so far this year — the lowest total on record through this point in the year, excluding the COVID-19 pandemic, and more than 42% lower than when the Vision Zero program launched in 2013, according to the NYC Department of Transportation.
The decline is the result of continued investments in safer street designs, traffic enforcement and roadway improvements aimed at preventing deadly crashes, DOT said.
Despite the encouraging citywide trend, Campbell’s death has left a family and neighborhood grieving. Loved ones gathered Wednesday evening at the intersection where she was killed.
Police have not announced any charges as the investigation continues.
