A massive tree came crashing down Monday night on Franklin Avenue in Morrisania.

"It sounded like a big bomb, because there's like a big boom," said Anthony, a Morrisania resident.

It happened just before 6 p.m., according to the FDNY. Neighbors were shocked to see the tree sprawled from sidewalk to sidewalk.

"All I see is a tree fallen, I came downstairs," said one witness, who declined to be identified. "I'm like, 'Oh, what's going on? It's crazy.'"

The fire department says no one was injured.

"I'm just glad nobody was there to get hit by it," said resident Marvin. "It's funny, because it fell and went in between cars that were parked here, so, lucky people."

"One of the biggest trees here," Chyna Bryant, a neighbor said. "To see it fall down? Oh my goodness. And honestly, the power lines and everything makes it so much more scary."

That tree hit multiple utility lines as it came down. As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, 17 Con Edison customers were still without power. Crews were on scene working to fix the cables.

News 12 cameras captured the inside of the tree, which had dark spots. It's unclear if the tree had been rotting.

Some neighbors tell News 12 they have never seen any tree inspections in the area – though the NYC Parks Department website says the tree was inspected in July 2025.

News 12 reached out to the Parks Department for more information on the inspection and is waiting to hear back.
