The NYPD says New York City recorded historic lows in shootings, shooting victims and murders during the first seven months of 2026, while the Bronx posted the largest year-to-date drop in major crime of any borough.

According to the department, there were 381 shooting incidents citywide from January through July, down 7.5% from the same period last year. Police also reported 462 shooting victims, a 5.5% decrease, and 149 murders, down 22.8%.

Major crime fell 12.7% citywide in July alone, with declines reported in all seven major crime categories and across every borough.

The Bronx led the city with a 12.5% drop in major crime so far this year, falling from 18,153 incidents during the same period in 2025 to 15,886 this year.

Robberies in the borough decreased 18.1%, while grand larcenies dropped 14.9%.

Major crime in the Bronx fell 19% in July compared to July 2025. Auto theft declined 37%, and grand larceny decreased nearly 24%.

The numbers come as the borough continues to experience high-profile acts of gun violence.

An 87-year-old woman was shot in the face during a double shooting Friday. Police also said a 50-year-old man was shot and killed Monday morning in Van Nest.

News 12 asked Mayor Zohran Mamdani how the city reconciles its declining crime statistics with the violence residents are still experiencing in their neighborhoods.

“So long as there is crime in the Bronx and there is crime in New York City, it means that there is work for us to do,” the mayor said. “We can acknowledge and appreciate the incredible work of the men and women of the NYPD in reducing crime and also know that there is still so much more work to be done.”

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch credited the declines to the department’s data-driven policing strategy, gang takedowns and efforts to remove illegal guns from city streets.

The NYPD said detectives have carried out 25 gang-related takedowns so far this year.

The department also reported historic declines in violent crime inside public housing developments. Murders in NYCHA developments fell 45% year to date, while shooting incidents dropped 33.3% and shooting victims declined 35.2%.

Despite the overall downward trend, major crime in public housing increased 3.5% in July compared to the same month last year.
