Members of St. Barnabas Church in the Bronx are warning residents about scammers pretending to be affiliated with the church.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the church said scam emails and messages may appear to come from St. Barnabas Parish or Father Fitzgerald. The church told News 12 that these scams have been going on for years.
The post added that the parish or priest will never send an email or text message asking someone to purchase gift cards or provide financial information. Anyone who receives a similar message claiming to be from the church should not respond, click on any links or purchase gift cards. Instead, they should delete the email or text immediately.
Anyone who thinks they have fallen for the scam should contact the NYPD.
