Ship Bottom officials are warning residents to stop painting streets and curbs to reserve parking spaces, saying violators could face criminal charges.
The warning comes after borough officials noticed unauthorized markings on public streets and curbs that appeared to be attempts to reserve or protect parking spaces.
It is illegal to paint on public streets or curbs without authorization. Graffiti and other forms of roadway defacement can be prosecuted as criminal mischief, according to a post on the borough's Facebook page.
Violations can range from disorderly persons offenses to third-degree crimes, depending on the extent of the damage. Penalties may include fines, restitution and mandatory community service for graffiti removal, with more severe consequences possible when damages exceed $500.
