A gas leak in Mount Kisco forced the evacuation of two schools in the Bedford Central School District on Thursday, according to village and school officials.

The scene of the leak was at 52 Hyland Ave. Crews continued repair work Thursday afternoon.

Michael Cindrich, mayor of Mount Kisco, said the leak occurred when crews performing excavation work for water line and sanitary sewer improvements struck a gas line.

The odor prompted the evacuation of students at Mount Kisco Elementary School and Hillside Alternative School. Students from both schools were transported to Fox Lane High School while officials assessed the situation.

Robert Glass, superintendent of the Bedford Central School District, said no students were harmed.

Cindrich said it appears the gas line mark-out may have been placed incorrectly. He added that an after-incident evaluation will be conducted to review the response and circumstances surrounding the leak.
