Flames ripped through a detached garage in Bergenfield just before sunrise Thursday, threatening nearby homes and prompting evacuations.
Bergenfield fire crews responded to a South Woodside Avenue home at about 6 a.m. for reports of an active fire. When police and firefighters arrived, they found the detached two-car garage fully engulfed in flames.
“Engine 3 arrived very shortly afterwards and quickly deployed two attack lines, starting a fast, aggressive, offensive fire attack preventing the fire from spreading to the surrounding structures,” the fire department said in a social media post.
Mutual aid crews from fire departments in Dumont and New Milford also responded to help battle the large flames and take steps to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures. Firefighters said several nearby homes were temporarily evacuated as a precaution until the fire was brought under control.
Officials said the Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to assist firefighters by providing water, clean towels and standby medical coverage.
No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
