After a rainy start to the fall harvest, East End farms are hoping for a beautiful fall weekend to bring families out to enjoy the season.
At Wickham’s Fruit Farm in Cutchogue, visitors can pick their own apples from 25 different varieties. The farm has been in production for 300 years and has offered U-pick wagon rides and apple cider donuts for decades. “We were one of the first ones to have the U-pick wagon rides as well as the apple cider donuts going,” said Laurie McBride of Wickham’s Fruit Farm. “The rain has definitely put a damper on us, we’re having rain on key U-pick days, so this weekend should be gorgeous weather.”
In Riverhead, Holzman’s Farm offers another way to enjoy the fall harvest, with about 20 different varieties of pumpkins, including some unique varieties visitors may not have seen before. Visitors can fill a cart or wheelbarrow with pumpkins for one set price, according to Audrey Holzman.
After picking pumpkins, families can explore the farm’s corn maze, take a hayride, play lawn games and enjoy rubber duck races and photo opportunities with straw animals. Dogs are welcome, too.
With cooler temperatures and clearer skies in the forecast, the farms are hoping for a busy weekend filled with fall fun.
