A fire in Throggs Neck left one person injured and a family displaced. More than 140 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the blaze.
Neighbors describe the moment they saw flames quickly tear through a house on Swinton Avenue Sunday night.
"I heard a big boom and I thought it was a car accident somewhere around here," Maritza Solis said. "And then all of a sudden I saw the flames and the fire department.”
Citizen video shows those flames engulfing the home.
“It was pretty big," another neighbor said. "I’m pretty sure it went up the entire backside of the house”
The fire department says the fire broke out just after 6:30 p.m. More than 140 firefighters and EMS workers responded.
One person was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. The fire also forced a family from the home.
Next-door neighbor Eddy Sosa says he watched the flames spread quickly.
“I looked out the window and I saw a little fire like on a garbage can, but it was under the wooden porch," Sosa said. "And in a matter of seconds the deck was on fire and it was burning the side of the house.”
The American Red Cross says it is now providing temporary housing and financial aid to six adults and one child.
"You know what this tells me? Your life can change in a matter of minutes," Sosa said. "And to me, your loved ones are the most important thing."
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
