Survivors of sexual violence and advocates gathered outside of Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie's District Office in Pelham Gardens on Thursday to gain support for the "Jane Doe Bill."
Supporters of the bill say New York State law has a gap that could leave sexual violence survivors without adequate protection if they voluntarily used alcohol or drugs and were too incapacitated to consent.
The "Jane Doe Bill," initially sparked by the alleged gang-rape at Cornell University, seeks to strengthen New York's legal protections for survivors.
The coalition is calling on Speaker Heastie to advance the bill.
