For the first time in 15 years, the TCS New York City Marathon is changing its course through the Bronx, and local business owners in Mott Haven say they're excited about what the new route could mean for their community.
With thousands of runners expected to hit the streets on Sunday, businesses along the updated route are preparing to welcome spectators, runners and potential new customers.
The changes will bring runners farther along Alexander Avenue, where they will continue to East 141st Street instead of turning onto East 138th Street. From there, runners will turn onto Third Avenue before making their way back to East 138th Street and crossing the Madison Avenue Bridge into Manhattan.
For some business owners, the change presents an opportunity to attract more customers and introduce their businesses to people visiting the neighborhood.
Ahmed, a local business owner, says his business is already preparing for Sunday's marathon, with plans to get everything in place ahead of the crowds.
"The day before, we start everything," Ahmed said, describing his preparations for race day.
For Rosalba Reyes, whose family operates a small business in the neighborhood, the marathon brings excitement and the possibility of additional support for her parents' business.
"It will be a big help," Reyes said, referring to what the increased attention could mean for "our little business here."
Reyes says she's helping her parents prepare by making sure they have enough supplies and staff to accommodate the anticipated crowds.
While the updated course means runners will travel through a different stretch of Mott Haven, business owners are welcoming the changes with enthusiasm.
For these small businesses, Sunday's marathon isn't just about the runners crossing the finish line. It's also an opportunity to showcase their neighborhood, connect with new customers and potentially see a boost in business during one of New York City's biggest annual events.
