Police rescued a German Shepard and 21 puppies living inside a car in the Bronx.
The dogs were rescued Monday afternoon from an SUV found on the corner of Middletown Road and Edison Avenue.
Officials say the dogs were living inside the Mercedes SUV with a 54-year-old homeless woman who is believed to be mentally ill.
Sources say the car smelled like urine and feces, some of which was found in the dogs' fur.
Police say the woman was taken to Montefiore Hospital, while the dogs were taken into police custody. Some of the dogs were in need of veterinary care.
The dogs are all expected to be OK, although one was discovered to have suffered from blood loss.
Officials say no charges will be filed against the woman and that the dogs are now with Adore-A-Bullie Paws and Claws, a Bronx-based rescue and re-homing organization.
