Police are searching for three men suspected of fatally shooting Morrisania man inside the lobby of his apartment building Friday morning.

The NYPD says officers responded to a 911 call shortly after 6:30 a.m. at the Forest Houses, where they found 27-year-old Jayvontae Simmons unconscious with a gunshot wound to the head.

First responders rushed Simmons to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, where he later died from his injuries.

The shooting triggered a large police presence at the NYCHA building throughout the day as detectives searched for evidence. Residents told News 12 that the building was effectively placed on lockdown, with people needing police clearance to enter or leave while investigators worked inside.

Residents were shaken by the loss, describing Simmons as a respectful and helpful member of the community.

Investigators were seen removing evidence from the building in brown paper bags as they continued to piece together what happened.

Police say the investigation remains active.
