3 arrested in street vendor assault; 2 suspects sought
Three people who police say assaulted a Bronx street vendor in the Hub have been arrested and charged while two suspects remain on the loose.
Souleymane Porgo, 53, was awake Friday at Lincoln Hospital and able to move his fingers and legs after a weeklong coma. His breathing tube was removed, but he has now been given a feeding tube.
Video captured the brutal beating of Porgo May 2 at East 149th Street and Third Avenue.
The first suspect, 22-year-old William Bergess, was arrested surrendering at the NYPD's 40th Precinct earlier this week. Octavious Profit, 24, and Enrique Foote, 18, turned themselves in to police Thursday evening.
Profit and Foote are charged with two counts of gang assault, two counts of assault and menacing. They are both due back in court Tuesday.
Prosecutors say Profit was the instigator in the assault, hitting Porgo first and also throwing the last strike while Porgo was already on the ground, bleeding.
People in the Hub are showing their support for Porgo, who worked his corner for years. Using chalk, residents have written positive notes on the sidewalk showing their opposition to the violence.
