One person is dead and two people are injured after a shooting in Claremont, police confirm.

The incident began as a dispute between two neighbors over who was going to use the backyard at an apartment building on College Avenue, according to police sources. A 37-year-old man was shot in the chest and was pronounced deceased at a local hospital.

A 62-year-old man was shot in the arm. Another man, a 59-year-old who is believed to be homeless by sources, was shot in the backside. Both were also taken to the hospital and are stable.

Neighbors who spoke with News 12 say they heard at least five gunshots inside and outside their building.

A man identifying himself as 42-year-old Jimmy Avila called the News 12 newsroom, saying that he shot two people and barricaded himself at his apartment. Police have not identified the shooter.

Police sources say that they have a person of interest in custody.
