Three correction officers at Rikers Island are now suspended without pay after being charged with making false reports regarding an alleged attack on an inmate.
Prosecutors say Carl Williams, Roy Dewar, and Jatan Das were involved in the violent 2021 incident. According to the district attorney, Williams was seen on surveillance video hitting an inmate in the face, while Das and Dewar looked on.
All three officers are accused of then turning in paperwork stating that the inmate was the attacker. The city's Department of Correction issued a statement in response to the charges saying, "The indictment of these correction officers is in no way a reflection of the hard-working women and men who represent New York's boldest."
The city's Union for Correction Officers also issued a statement on these charges calling out the DA's office for the timeliness of this case saying, "We hope that the over 800 cases of inmates charged with assaulting our officers over the past five years will be treated with the same zealous prosecution displayed in this case."
