5K walk held to raise awareness of domestic violence
A 5K walk was held in the Bronx to help raise awareness about domestic violence on Saturday.
Runners and walkers made their way up and down the Grand Concourse in purple colors, which represents domestic violence awareness.
According to the New York City Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee, the Bronx had the highest number of intimate partner deaths at 78 between 2010 to 2016.
Community activist Heather Guerino says she has family members who were victims of domestic violence – one passing away as a result.
Guerino says she is fighting to get a bill passed in Albany to make permanent orders of protection possible.
In part, the bill would allow police to be retrained on how to handle orders of protection and close loopholes that she says abusers take advantage of.
