Six people were injured Sunday after a fire tore through a six-story apartment building in Claremont Village located at 445 East 174th St, according to authorities.

All were hospitalized with one person having serious injuries after inhaling a significant amount of smoke.

FDNY officials say the blaze began on a second-floor kitchen around 9:30 a.m., and quickly spread to the third-floor apartment above. Those two units had to be vacated, while other residents were allowed back into their units.

The Red Cross is assisting eight adults and four kids.

It took 45 minutes for the fire to be contained, thanks in part to the location of a nearby firehouse and clear access to fire hydrants, officials said.

A resident said they saw when "black smoke filled the building," and "someone had to escape using the fire escape."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
