A church that has been in Crotona Park for 75 years received a special honor Sunday via a street renaming ceremony.
Cheers erupted when a new sign along Hoe Avenue was unveiled to co-name the road Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church Way.
"To be able to name this after the church is a true honor and reflection of the hard work that my dad and grandfather labored here in the bronx," said Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church Pastor Rev. Frederick Crawford, whose grandfather started the church back in 1946.
Councilmember Rafael Salamanca Jr. pushed for the renaming of the street.
"Union Grove is not just a place where you go and you pray, but they provide supportive services. They have food drives, they have clothing drives," Salamanca said. "When COVID hit they opened up their church for COVID testing. It's important we honor their commitment and that we honor their legacy."
Church members who joined local leaders in the celebration said the church has uplifted this community.
Crawford said the church will continue the work that his father and grandfather started of helping the community.
