Manhattan native rapper A$AP Rocky was honored by the Volunteers of America Greater NY for his humanitarian work.
The rapper has a close connection with the organization as they provided housing for him and his mother during a period of homelessness.
On Monday night, the group honored him with its first ever Lifetime Achievement Award for his resilience and ability to rise from tough times.
"It's very and important and significant for people like me to aspire to be something more than what their situation is,” A$AP Rocky says. “Some people don't have any control over the situations they're in. And you got to grow into something. I hope I’m an inspiration for people to look at and say, ‘I can surpass that.’"
Last month, A$AP Rocky visited the organization’s residence in Harlem on Thanksgiving to help serve food to those in need.
He also donated several hot meals to the Regent Family Residence homeless shelter, where he once lived.
Volunteers of America Greater NY's 25th annual gala was held the Plaza. The star-studded attendance list included NBA stars John Starks and Charles Smith, as well as actress Julianne Moore.
Starks says it’s important to come together and lend a helping hand now more than ever before.
“My career speaks for itself…I’m on a platform where I can help others. And using that wisely is the most important thing,” he says. “I continue to go out in the community and do these that are going to inspire others."
Proceeds from the gala will go to the Volunteers of America Greater NY’s 66 social service programs.
